Professional Videographer

Teaching Council CE Interview

Kia ora, My name is Michael Murphy. I’m a Film and Television graduate based in Wellington, with 10+ years of videography experience for clients behind me. My passion is to seek out strong narrative which best represents the clients vision, or in the case of my personal film projects, my vision.

Every client I work with has something to say and my job is to help shape that vision and message, enabling it to land the way they intend.

As a script writer, story narrative and idea generation is my bread and butter. But, If food analogy isn’t your cup of tea, I assure you I’m analogy fluid.

My philosophy on content creation is, inspiration and ideas don’t descriminate. Young or less young, every creative has a voice, their Tūrangawaewae. Perspective is often the secret sauce. (and more food analogies)

So please get in touch. I look forward to creating with you.

Personal Creative.

I’m of Ngati Porou, Ngati Konohi, Maori, Scottish, Hawaiian decent, and Wellington born. From the mean Streets of 5 Waihora Cres - Canons Creek Porirua in the mid 70s and 80s to the mean streets of 5 Fleming Street - Kaiti - Gisborne and Mihiwhetu Rd Whangara. The third child of four to a single Maori Mum in the 70s and 80s meant you experience a bit. Good and bad. From it, I gained character and relevant life experience.

In 1989 I moved from Gizzy back to Welly, where I met the people who would guide me toward writing and filmmaking. The pursuit that would taunt me, mainly in the backgound as the day-job often drains you of time and energy. Like a Chef who comes home after work and eats a cold can of baked beans. Too tired to make art. Also, when you’re not making films, you become really proficient at making excuses as to why you’re not making films. Recently though, it’s come - a - knocking again, and I’m keen to answer the call or the door or both. It’s the itch I have to scratch.

I’m also an extremely average guitar player and even worse drummer who loves to sing. You’ll often see me parked around Shelly Bay / Seatoun or Breaker Bay, with my guitar and a flask of tea, belting out Radio Head, The Motels Bowie or Shihad. If you like a sing song and you’re not scared to belt one out, come over. I’m sure we’ll make good music or foul noise.

So that’s me really. Gen X proud with a penchant for the creative.
